Your physical needs come first. Be sure to eat nutritious meals, get a good night sleep, and exercise often. This may be easier said than done, but keeping this in the back of your mind and doing these 3 simple tasks when possible can have a huge impact on your mental and physical health.
Spend more time with friends. Isolating yourself will only increase your stress.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It is possible for relatives and friends to help out, even if they are not physically close. Make a to-do list and send it to others asking if they are able to help out.
Seek help from your community. See if there are any geriatric care managers in your area that can coordinate aspects of your loved one’s care. Also, it may be worth your time to reach out to volunteers or staff from faith-based organizations or civic groups that may be willing to visit, cook, or help with driving.
Take a well-deserved break. Some nursing homes, assisted living residences, and other similar facilities accept short-term residents. You may also look into adult day cares that provide care in a group setting. Respite care by friends, family, or volunteers may also be another option.
Let your feelings flow. It is important to seek emotional support from family and friends and/or a professional. Bottling up your emotions will only increase your stress and it may affect your mental as well as your physical well-being.
Whether its reading, walking, or listening to music, take the time to relax. Meditation or relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or visualizing a positive place, can be great for your psyche.
Prioritize your responsibilities. Get organized by using simple tools like calendars and to-do lists. This will help you stay on track and make sure you accomplish the tasks that are most important.
Know when to say no. You cannot do everything, and accepting this is much easier than dwelling on it. If someone asks you to do more than you can handle, be honest and say no. Also, it’s important to not feel guilty when you do have to say no to others.
Be optimistic. Try your best to stay clear of negativity. Negativity will only make matters worse. Focus on the positive and the rewards that come with caring for the ones you love.
